Advanced Proficiency Training Enhances Care
ComForcare localized Hospice and Alzheimer's Training

What is believed to be a first in the Home Care industry of Charlotte, ComForcare caregivers are put through training at least once per year by both the local Alzheimer's Association (NC) and Hospice and Pallative Care of Charlotte. Certified Nursing Assistants, at the end of the training, even received CEU's (one hour each) from each group as part of their on-going annual CEU requirements by state law.

Senior Care-Giving

We all know someone who has experience being a Caregiver. In many instances we ourselves have been the caregiver, usually for loved ones, who have fallen ill for either a short time period or sometimes more permanent; sometimes even terminally. Therefore Caregivers can be family, friends or paid employees - the later usually employed by a Home Health Agency. The types of Home Health Agencies will be discussed later.
If it is one thing that you can count on for the future, it is that people will continue to get older and will need the help of Caregivers. The Baby Boomer generation is now reaching retirement age and they will need help from their grown adult children. Spouses of the one in need often don't have the physical abilities to help care for their husband or wife who lie ill. Even if they do, they can quickly become overwhelmed with having to become (in many cases) a full time caregiver for a loved one which dramatically affects their own quality of life both physically and emotionally. This, of course, can then spiral into there being two patients instead of one!
The Adult Children, often referred to as "The Sandwich Generation", are often a major element to their parents' caregiving formula. However, the need to juggle caregiving for their elderly parents while still being able to take care for their own immediate families and their ever demanding careers can certainly be a difficult task. In some cases, the adult children are located hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away from their parent(s) who need help. What other options are out there?
If you do choose to go the route of a Home Care Agency, you must ask key questions prior to the start of any service. Remember, these agencies/companies will be sending individuals into your home or the home of your loved ones. Thus selecting the right agency/company which both selects and sends the caregivers out is a vital part of this process. Some key questions to ask include:

    * Is the Agency and its Caregivers Bonded and Insured?
    * Is there an on-going Caregiver evaluation and training policy?
    * What is their Hiring Policy and Procedures (ie, Background Checks, Tests, Experience of Caregivers)?
    * Are RN's on staff for case opening, caregiver evaluations and review, and medical consultation?
    * Is the Agency / Corporation local or national?
    * Are there emergency back-up caregivers in case of an emergency or unforeseen event?

The term "Home Health Agency" is usually broken down further into either Skilled (Ie, Nursing, Therapists) or Non-Medical (ie, Companions, CNA's) Care. All of the above issues need to be part of your selection criteria in choosing a Home Care or Home Health Agency. But also it is the connection you have with that particular company, or in many cases an individual, that is so very important. Because lets face it, after all of the basic requirements are met, "Trust" with that Home Health/Home Agency is very important since they will select, schedule, and monitor the progress of the Caregiver in the home. And that is what you (in one way or another) are paying for - Peace-of- Mind that someone is taking care of this for you and your family.

First Annual Silver Torch Award Winner
The Better Business Bureau Consumer Foundation presented the First Annual Silver Torch Award to ComForcare Senior Services of Charlotte. The 2007 Silver Torch Award was designed to recognize outstanding companies in the Charlotte and surrounding areas who provide service excellence within the older adult community. Maryanne P. Dailey, MA, Director of the Better Business Bureau Consumer Foundation said, "The winner was selected by an independent panel of judges comprised of educators and state representatives specializing in the older adult community. We are very proud to have such high caliber of companies serving this special population." The winner was announced at the Award Ceremony on Thursday, October 11, 2007 in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Charlotte Metro Social Worker and Case Manager Appreciation Luncheon held at Centerstage @ NoDa.

Phil Koch is all about a good night's sleep. Not just for himself, but for the couple hundred of clients, and their families, he currently is working with. For them, a good nights sleep is one factor in helping to improve their quality of life.

Phil, and his wife Lisa, are in the business of helping people. They are co-owners of ComForcare Senior Services - a home care service provider for, primarily, the elderly in their homes or in senior communities. In just a few years, they have seen their business grow from servicing a four county area to a ten county area within the Charlotte region including upstate SC..

ComForcare's surge in growth within the area's home care industry is a result of a combination of hard work and dedication. However, the foundation in which ComForcare is built upon is integrity and customer service. "Our company puts integrity and customer service at the forefront of everything we do with our clients and their families," Phil Koch said. "Our clients and their families entrust us personally with guiding them through very difficult and emotional times that, as a result, can often touch family dynamics." It has been said that business integrity is the heart and soul of a company's culture. The Koch's make sure it starts with them and trickles down to both office staff and the caregivers they employ.

Phil and Lisa Koch presented with the First Annual Silver Torch Award

"Integrity is vital in this industry," Phil Koch said. "These seniors are reliant upon us, and under no circumstances should they be mistreated or taken advantage of."

The services that ComForcare provides areas is predicated on matching the right caregiver with the client. "Our services are generally one-on-one", said Koch. "To us, it's much more than just business. It's personal too. It is our job to put a personal, trusting, and reliable face to the service we provide. Ultimately, our product is the trust and relationship that is built between the caregiver and the client."

Gerard McDonough, CEO of Leadfirst Leadership Development in Charlotte, arranged for ComForcare to assist his mother in her relocation from Williamsburg, VA to Charlotte, NC. He was impressed how ComForcare went the extra mile to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.

"Frequent changes in my mother's condition required a great deal of flexibility on [ComForcare's] part," said McDonough. "I couldn't have been more pleased with ComForcare's ability to flex with, and even anticipate, our needs."

On October 11, 2007, ComForcare Senior Services was named the inaugural winner of the Silver Torch Award. This award, given to one company each year, was sponsored by the Better Business Bureau Consumer Foundation. It, was designed to recognize outstanding companies in the Charlotte and surrounding areas who provide service excellence within the older adult community.

Phil Koch feels this honor will continue to raise the image and profile of ComForcare in the region. "We are thrilled to be the winner of the Silver Torch award," Koch said. "For a new company with only a few years under our belt, this award confirms to me that we are on the right path. It's nice to see that our work ethic, morals, and dedication to service are beginning to be recognized within the industry."
The Koch's experienced the need for home health assistance back in 200X. Lisa's father, Maurice, fell ill with osteoporosis. However, his illness wasn't severe enough to warrant full-time nursing care. As a result, this meant that Lisa's mother, Shirley had to take on the role of the caregiver.

As the stress of the situation began to mount, Phil and Lisa could see the strain it was placing on Shirley. Her social life and activities were suffering, and she was beginning to lose weight. This caused concern for Lisa and her sisters. Now they began worrying about their mother. In just a short period of time, the entire family, in one form or another, became caregivers.

The Koch's sought advice and support for their dilemma. They discovered that the need for a part-time home care giver was just the solution they were looking for. This way, Maurice's needs were taken care of, enabling Shirley to resume her day-to-day activities and return to somewhat of a normal schedule. This situation opened their eyes about the need and the future demand for home care in this country.

With this new found perspective, the Koch's look at their clients in a new way. "The question that we continually ask ourselves in providing our service is how you would I want my your mother and father taken care of," Phil Koch explained. "We have been there, and have some understanding of what our clients and their families are going through." And that makes them proud. "This is about providing care in someone's home, apartment, or retirement community to ease both the work load and stress of the client, but equally that of the family and friends that are also caregivers."

"At the end of the day, we can both sleep well at night knowing, that through our actions at home and our company, we are doing the right thing," he added.

Everyone needs a little help from time to time

In a perfect world every person suffering from a long-term illness, recovering from an injury or dealing with the challenges of aging would have a network of family and friends to help with daily needs. Often, that simply isn't the case. Today's busy lifestyles means that family and friends don't have the time or resources to consistently care for a loved one at home. The need for dependable, caring and qualified private duty care presents daunting challenges for many people.
ComForcareSM has answers

We provide assistance with the activities of daily living including companionship, meal preparation, hands-on personal care and 24-hour supervision. A registered nurse or other licensed professional consults with the client and family, developing a personalized care plan. Then, highly trained ComForcare caregivers use that plan as a guide for the client's daily activities and care.

"Thank you very much for contributing to the Harriet Jackson Fund in memory of my mother. Our family's goal was to keep my mom physically and mentally challenged. "My name is Rosalind Lewis and I am a new client for your senior care services. I recently met (your R.N.) last Friday. I must say I am impressed with the way she presented herself and Comforcare to me. Please let her know that she is on the right track because I don't get impressed easily. She is a real winner!

I've heard good remarks about your services from a social worker in the Carolinas Healthcare system. I have lots of healthcare and human services experience in addition to having a B.S. Degree in the field + additional credits towards a M.S. I have cared for more than a few family members with serious health problems. I had to interview caregivers and oversee the care of these persons. Now I need care for myself as I live alone and have many serious medical conditions to monitor. I won't settle for less than the best and with Comforcare Senior Services, I know I won't have to. Thank you for being there!

Mr. Koch I saw you along with Maryanne Daily of the B.B.B on the Ageing With Attitude program last night. Congratulations on your (Silver Torch) award. Once again, THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE!"
