To make sure you are hiring a home care agency that offers the level of quality care you need, it is important to ask the right questions.
- How long has the agency been in business?
- Are their employee’s Subcontractors (not recommended!) or Direct Agency Employees?
- What levels of care does the agency provide?
- If required, is the agency licensed by the state?
- What is the agency’s hiring process?
- Do they hire experienced caregivers?
- Do they test employees on home care skills?
- Do they perform extensive criminal and background checks on caregivers?
- Are caregivers screened for drug use?
- Do they check references?
- How are caregivers trained and does the agency provide continuing education?
- Are the caregivers licensed, bonded and insured?
- Are the caregivers supervised and how are caregivers evaluated?
- Are the agency’s employees friendly and helpful when you call?
- How does the agency handle expenses and billing?
- What payment sources does the agency accept?
- Is a deposit required?
- Will the agency coordinate the resources of medical equipment, healthcare providers and other professionals?
- Does the agency provide an assessment of the client’s needs by a nurse or other licensed professional? If so, is there a fee? And are their on-going Re-Assessments by the Agency?
- Will you receive a written care plan before service begins?
- How are clients and caregivers matched? Can you replace a Caregiver whenever you wish?
- What procedures does the agency have in place if a caregiver is late for a shift or calls off due to illness, vacation, emergency?
- Does the Agency employ Caregivers and/or Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA’s) in the office for Administrative and/or Staffing Positions?
- Are there any limits on the types of tasks performed? If so, what are they?
- Are there other agencies/organizations that the Agency has local licenses with and/or they are subject to an audit from?
- Is the agency willing to meet your scheduling needs?
- Is there a minimum number of hours for care services?
- Is care available 24/7, if necessary?
- How quickly can services begin?
- How are problems addressed and resolved? Who should be contacted for requests, questions or complaints?
In addition, to all of the above, always ask about Awards and Certifications (both Regional and National) that separates that agency apart from other local competitors. Also, ask for a list of printed Testimonials from past and/or prior clients who have given approval (this is a must – due to HIPAA requirement) from the agency. Most will provide this on their website or will be able to e-mail and/or mail to you.
